Cross Your Toes is the vision of a sculptor
and a painter whose combined inspiration is to create original artwork
and make it approachable, available and affordable.
Work produced by Cross Your Toes blends the influences of both artists
backgrounds. The process of discovering how their techniques intersect
with one another lends to the awareness that in art, as in life, human
beings are not separate from one another or the earth we inhabit.
We can find parallels and similarities that weave us together within
our world. Rich layers of color and textured surfaces are integral
parts of the painting voyage as are the events and emotions of each
day that what define our individual journeys. While spontaneous and
whimsical, they are also about thoughtfulness and inquiry. They are
the path chosen; the art-making process becomes the subject matter.
Working abstractly and loosely allows an intimacy and flexibility
to discover the language of different mediums and materials. Combining
paint, fiber, graphite, and encaustic wax for example, evoke different
qualities of relationship.
Working collaboratively is one of many things that make us unique
and gives our paintings a definite distinctiveness. Each series is
an exploration into the unknown with two sets of eyes to view the
canvas, and two minds and hearts to appreciate the depth of intention.
This partnership allows us to relax and give up some control in our
work- to let the process take over. Check our egos at the door and
go with what works best for the piece. There's a balance that is
challenging to accomplish between deliberation and randomness; setting
some elements up perfectly and letting some things go on impulse.
